How the times are calculated
Each prayer time depends on the position of the sun at your location. Fajr begins when the sun is a set angle below the horizon before sunrise, Dhuhr just after it passes its highest point, Asr when shadows reach a given length, Maghrib at sunset and Isha when twilight ends. Al Qibla Finder calculates these moments with precise astronomical formulas, directly on your device, so the page also works without internet.
The calculation method is chosen automatically from your country, such as the Ministry of Habous in Morocco, Diyanet in Türkiye, Kemenag in Indonesia, Umm al-Qura in Saudi Arabia and ISNA in North America. Elsewhere the Muslim World League method is used. You can change it at any time. Read the methodology for details.
Safety minutes and local time
Official timetables add a few safety minutes (ihtiyat or temkin) to some prayers so the prayer never starts too early anywhere in a city. Al Qibla Finder adds the same minutes as each authority and shows the result in your local time, including summer time.
Long summer evenings
In places such as the United Kingdom and Scandinavia, the sky never gets fully dark around midsummer, so the normal twilight angles give a very late Isha or no Fajr at all. The high-latitude rule fixes this with a share of the night, the approach recommended by the Muslim World League. Your local mosque may use a different rule, so follow its timetable when it publishes one.
Frequently asked questions
Which calculation method should I choose?
Keep Automatic unless your mosque uses a different method. Automatic selects the method of the official authority in your country, for example the Ministry of Habous in Morocco or Diyanet in Türkiye.
What is the difference between standard and Hanafi Asr?
In the standard opinion (Shafi'i, Maliki and Hanbali schools) Asr begins when an object's shadow equals its length plus its noon shadow. In the Hanafi school it begins when the shadow is twice the length, which is about 30 to 90 minutes later.
Why can my mosque's times differ from this page?
Mosques often publish the start of the prayer time and a separate congregation time (iqama). Some also use their own method or extra safety minutes. Small differences of one or two minutes are normal.
Why is the Hijri date different from my country's date?
The Hijri date here follows the Umm al-Qura calendar. Many countries start each month after their own moon sighting, which can be one day later or earlier. Use the Hijri date correction in the settings to match your country.
Does it work without internet?
Yes. After your first visit the page is saved on your phone and all times are calculated on the device. Only the online city search needs a connection.
Is my location stored?
No. Your location is used on your device only. Your chosen city and settings are saved in your own browser so the times appear instantly next time, and you can delete them by clearing the site data.
